Fall is many people’s favorite time of year. With the crisp, fresh air and colorful leaves, what’s not to enjoy? For some reason, though, people think that summer is the only time to book a getaway. We want to encourage you to consider fall as a second chance for that much-needed break from it all.

Here are three ways to enjoy a mini-escape this fall at Indian Point!

Stay inside and enjoy the show – We live in one of the most beautiful areas on earth, and fall treats us to views so spectacular they almost seem unreal! So, if you’re tired, over-worked, stressed out, and ready for a break, why not book a room and make it a weekend of downtime? Sit by the fire with a book or enjoy some cocoa by the window, and simply take it all in.

Enjoy a show, minus the drive – There are many fun things to do in and around Branson, especially during the holiday season. The amazing Christmas display at Silver Dollar City alone is worth the drive. If you’re really wanting to enjoy yourself, however, book a room and stay the night so you can top off your long day of fun with a relaxing night, not a tiring drive!

Get out on the lake – Just because the summer’s over doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy some lake time. The lake changes in fall, offering you a more calm and serene experience than in the summer. You can rent a boat and go fishing, or just cruise the lake and enjoy the beauty of the Ozarks in fall.

Additionally, if you like hiking, biking, or jogging, this is the perfect time of year for you! So book a room and give yourself a break from it all this fall!

Do you hear the call of the open road? A road trip can be a great way to explore, clear your head, and enjoy a bit of freedom. It’s also an affordable way to take a mini-vacation over a long weekend. If you have a preschooler, however, you might think your days of road trips are  behind you. With a little planning, however, you can still enjoy the freedom of the winding road.

First and foremost, be sure to set reasonable daily goals. Taking a road trip doesn’t have to mean logging as many miles as possible in a single day. If you have a preschooler, you’ll want to take plenty of breaks and allow enough time to rest each night. You might not get as far, but you also won’t have to deal with a fussy little one.

Next, remember to factor in entertainment. Keeping your preschooler entertained and engaged will help them see the fun in road trips. Print maps to color, pack binoculars that they can use, take pictures, and document your adventure. This will keep everyone happy and instill a love of adventure as well.

A hungry kid is an unhappy kid, so be sure to pack plenty of snacks. Include their favorite treats along with items that are more substantial. Make it more fun by putting surprise foods in brown bags that you give them when they complain about a rumbling tummy. This is an entertaining way to cure hunger.

And don’t be afraid to use technology to your advantage. You can take pictures and make videos along the way, track your trek on GPS, or watch a favorite movie when it’s time to take a nap. Your youngster will like the distractions and you’ll enjoy a bit of quiet time.

Many things can take the fun out of your vacation, like a delayed flight, inclement weather, or catching a cold. While you can’t do much to stop some things from ruining your vacation fun, you can take steps to keep a sunburn from destroying your summer plans.

First and foremost, always be prepared to protect you and your family from the sun. Pack plenty of sun protection, including things like hats, sunglasses, and your preferred sunscreen. Make sure you include sunscreen that is waterproof, even if you’re not planning any water-related activities. This ensures you’re ready for last minute changes in your plans or an unexpected rainstorm.

Next, make sure that you plan ahead for shade if you have outdoor activities on the itinerary. This might mean bringing an umbrella or two in case there are no natural shade options around. You’ll also need to make sure that the little ones take frequent “shade breaks.” This will help them cool down, and gives you a chance to reapply sunscreen and watch for signs of sunburn.

Finally, don’t underestimate the sun. You can get sunburned on a cloudy day, on a rainy day, or even on cool days. This can be especially problematic since people often spend more time outside on days like this, all without sunscreen. Basically, however, any time you’re outside you face potential over-exposure. This means that no matter your destination or your plans, you should use have sun protection available.

Planning a vacation can be fun, but more often than not it is a stressful and frustrating experience. If you’re planning a vacation for your family, this can be compounded by trying to create a vacation that will please everyone.

While there is no secret to making everyone happy, there are some steps you can take as you plan to make the entire process easier. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Pre-Planning

Ask everyone for not only their ideal vacation, but a few alternatives that would make them happy as well. This gives you a Plan B should you need some flexibility while planning. Having a fallback position for everyone will also help you gauge where their priorities really are.

As you plan

Before you book anything, come up with an itinerary of your trip. Include any activities you’re planning along the way, and let everyone take a look. Seeing everything laid out makes it easier to imagine what the trip will really be like. This also gives everyone a second chance to weigh in on plans before you’ve made any commitments.

Consider free time

Sometimes family members have diverse interests that can’t really be addressed in a single outing. If this seems like your family, consider scheduling some free time for individuals to explore. For instance, if your spouse likes golf but you and the kids want to spend time at a water park, split up for part of the day and enjoy. There’s no rule that says you have to do everything together.
