Plenty of people look forward to the holidays, including the family gatherings that go with it. When you have to travel, however, it can quickly turn into a frustrating and stressful time – especially if you’re traveling with your family. While there is no surefire way to avoid all holiday travel stress, you can put the odds in your favor for your big holiday trip.

Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Before you make plans

Before you start to make plans, make sure you’re all on the same page. Since families can be complicated, with multiple sets of in-laws and families to visit, you should be sure everyone is happy with where you’re going for the holidays. This needs to happen long before you look into flights, map out a route, or compare accommodations. You should also have an alternative plan just in case your first choice doesn’t work out.

Consider your children’s ages

Children tolerate travel differently, so think about your kids carefully before making any solid plans. If you’re going on a road trip, plan to stop frequently for smaller children. If you’re flying, be sure to prepare them for the experience. No matter the means of travel, be sure to pack some “ busy kits” with items sure to keep your child’s attention. You should also look at school schedules to know what days are official school holidays.

Share your itinerary

Traveling with a family can be challenging, but you’re going to have a smoother experience if everyone knows what to expect. This is especially true of younger children. So, remove uncertainty by making an itinerary of your trip. Include any activities you’re planning along the way and let everyone take a look. Seeing everything laid out makes it easier to imagine what the trip will really be like.

Plan for free time

Sometimes family members have diverse interests that can’t really be addressed in a single outing. For instance, if your spouse likes fishing but you and the kids want to spend time shopping, split up for part of the day and enjoy. There’s no rule that says you have to do everything together. Planning for free time also gives your children some potential downtime and lets you plan on-the-spot outings with those you’ve traveled to visit.

For some reason, people only think about getting away in the summer. We know, however, that even though summer is over, the fun doesn’t have to end. In fact, there are plenty of things that you can only enjoy in fall, so why not make the most of it with these fun excursion ideas?

Enjoy the views – The Ozarks are full of beauty all year long, but in the fall we’re treated to some of the most amazing sights on Earth. So if you’re looking for a relaxing way to spend a few days, why not book a room and enjoy some downtime? This is a simple and surefire way to recharge your batteries and recover from stress.

Book a train ride – Branson is full of interesting things to do, including taking a train ride around the Ozarks on the Branson Scenic Railway. This 40-mile round trip through our beautiful area will offer you not only amazing sites, but also some local history in the process. Learn more about it.

Enjoy the lights, minus the drive – The holidays are particularly special in the Ozarks, especially if you’re a fan of amazing holiday lights. Silver Dollar City treats locals and tourists alike to an astounding display of creativity with over 6.5 million lights. Treat yourself to the display and book a room for the night so you can end your day with a relaxing night, not a tiring drive!

Get in touch with nature – Why not give yourself one last chance to enjoy some outdoor time before winter sets in? Just because the summer’s over doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy some time outdoors. You can spend some time on the lake fishing or cruise the water to enjoy the sights. Of course, you can also just hike or bike your way through some trails.

Summer may be the star of the show when it comes to vacations, but you don’t need two weeks off, thousands of dollars, or a passport to get away! Why not redefine what ‘vacation’ means and enjoy some much-deserved family time? In fact, you only need a little time and a bit of imagination to take yourself on a mini-vacation.

The 3-day getaway

If there are no long weekends ahead, you can make your own by taking one day off on either side of a weekend to create your own three-day break. Stay close to home to make the most of the time, so consider booking a room within an hour or two of home. This will give you a break from the ordinary without taking up too much of your time with travel.

The mid-week treat

Have you ever felt done with a week only to realize it’s just Wednesday? If you need to break up the work week, and step away from the stress for a bit, why not book a room with a view for Wednesday afternoon and take a half day of? No making dinner, no running errands, no making the bed – just some much needed downtime.

The treat-yourself night away

Having dinner at a nice restaurant is always fun, but why not extend it and make it an all-night affair? Rent a room with some amenities and really give yourself a treat. You can have a nice meal, go for a swim, soak in a hot tub, or relax by the fire. Even just a night of indulgence can recharge and reinvigorate you.

As you can see, you can get a break from the stress of life even if you don’t have the time or resources for a traditional vacation. So the next time you find yourself daydreaming about hitting the road or booking a cruise, consider one of these mini-vacations instead – you’ll be glad you did.

Ready for a break right now? We have a September offer that might be just what you’re looking for – learn more.

Summer is full of opportunities to relax and have fun. It’s also one time of the year when there tends to be a bit more time for play, with kids off on summer break and families planning vacations. Much of the fun times to be had involve water activities, especially here in the Ozarks. What better way to escape the heat than a day on the lake or a dip in the pool?

It’s good to keep in mind, however, that water activities come with risk. Every year people are injured or die due to drowning or boat-related accidents. With that in mind we wanted to offer everyone a few safety tips, ideas, and reminders to keep you and those you love safe this summer.

  1. Never let anyone swim alone. It doesn’t matter how strong a swimmer you might be, it’s always safer to swim in twos. Make this a family rule that is strictly followed

  2. Never drink while boating, swimming, skiing, or operating other watercraft. Alcohol is a known contributing factor in many drownings.
  3. When boating, always have everyone wear a life jacket. It doesn’t matter how good a swimmer you are, this simple precaution can be life-saving.

  4. Have a strong “no-horseplay” rule around water, including around the pool, on the shore, in the water, and on the boat. Kids in particular can get excited and forget the danger around them.

  5. Ban headfirst diving. Diving in feet-first is always safer, even in pools. If you do dive in other bodies of water, make sure you know the depth, that the water isn’t murky, and that there are no rocks anywhere near the dive path or water below.

  6. Always watch children around water, no matter how good a swimmer they are. Even if they are wearing flotation devices, kids should always be closely supervised.

  7. Don’t swim during a storm. If you hear thunder or see lightning, get out of the water immediately.

  8. Consider taking a CPR class, especially if you spend a lot of time on adventures with your family. This is a life-saving skill that you never know if you need.

  9. Set time limits on water-time. Children don’t always realize how tired they are or don’t want to miss out on any fun. This can be dangerous, however, so set time limits and make sure kids get out, rest, and recharge.

  10. Have your children take a swimming and water safety course. This is a fun way to learn how to stay safe in water from the experts.

Remember, no matter how long you’ve been swimming or boating, accidents happen. It only takes a moment for a good time to turn bad. So always be diligent and make sure that your summer is full of safe family fun.
